Voting hot for naming of new MISL team
The Thunderbolts, Pirates, Swamp Dragons and Fightin’ Fire Ants presently lead the voting Special to the Herald - Wed, Aug 16, 2006 More than 3,500 Central Florida sports fans have logged on to www.OrlandoMISL.com to vote for their favorite nickname for the new Orlando Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) team during the site’s first fourteen days, a number which exceeded club officials’ expectations. As a result of the heavy web traffic, and the submission of an additional 387 write-in names from voters, the selection process is being adjusted to reflect the input given by Central Floridians. In American Idol fashion, four team names will be eliminated from the competition each week. In the final round, Central Floridians will have four choices: the top two names from the original list of ten, and the two most popular write-in names. “We’ve already exceeded our expectations of community support and participation thus far,” said Rich Bradley, team president, and vice president of BVC Sports & Entertainment. “As such, we felt that we should adjust the process to reflect some truly outstanding submissions which were not part of the original ten names provided for consideration.” The four names registering the lowest tally of votes from the current group of ten choices on Friday, August 18, 2006, will be eliminated in the first cut. The following week, a second cut will remove four additional names based on total votes received by Friday, August 25, 2006. The top two choices will be joined on that date by the two most popular write-in names for a final showdown. All four finalists will have their vote totals re-set to zero and will go head-to-head from August 25 through September 4, 2006 at 12:01 a.m. The team name that receives the most votes will have a logo designed before being revealed to the general public in the fall of 2006. The soon-to-be-named team will debut in the 2007-08 MISL regular season, commencing with its Opening Night Gala in November 2007. The Thunderbolts, Pirates, Swamp Dragons and Fightin’ Fire Ants presently lead the vote totals of the original list of choices provided by the club on the Web site. Current leaders in the write-in category include the Orlando Blooms, the Sharks, the Piranhas, and the Attacking Squirrels. Fans who visit www.OrlandoMISL.com also have the option to participate in the team’s first sweepstakes, “Orlando’s Kickin’”, where they can win some of the first-issued team merchandise, tickets to the Opening Night Gala, invitations to a private team VIP reception and a grand prize trip to the team’s first away game in the fall of 2007.
